The Aberdeen Boat Club welcomes new members. In order to become a member of the club, follow the following procedure:

The joining fee for nominee membership cost HK$1,000,000. This is a one-off payment and it is not refundable. On being granted membership the holder of a Debenture Membership should nominate four members of its staff (together with spouse and children under 18 years of age) to use the facilities of the Club, known as the Debenture Subscriber. The Debenture Subscriber must pay the monthly charge.
(a) A company, firm or business may apply in writing for a debenture membership on payment of such sum fixed by the General Committee from time to time.
(b) The registration of such membership shall be entirely at the discretion of the General Committee, who may reject any application without giving reasons.
(c) On being granted membership, the debenture member shall enjoy voting rights which shall, subject to Section 115 of the Companies Ordinance, be exercisable by the debenture member only (and not by its nominee subscribers).
(d) The debenture member shall within 28 days of being granted membership pay a subscription fee of such amount as may from time to time be determined by the General Committee.
(e) The debenture member shall have the right to nominate in writing to the Honorary General Secretary four (4) members of its staff at a time to use the facilities of the Club.
(f) Such nominated persons, who shall be known as nominee subscribers, shall, if approved by the Genera Committee, enjoy all the facilities of the Club, subject to the matters as provided hereunder.
(g) The nominee subscribers shall be exempt from paying entrance fees, building levies and debentures.
(h) The debenture member may transfer its debenture to another company only with the approval of the General Committee and on payment to the Club of a transfer fee of a minimum of 10% of the consideration for the transfer or such other amount as may be determined by the General Committee. Any transfer of holding shall be deemed to have occurred when there is a transfer of 50% or more of the issued share capital of the debenture member; under such circumstances, a transfer fee shall be payable to the Club.
(i) After the first four nominee subscribers are allocated, each change of nominee subscriber shall incur a transfer fee of such amount as may be determined by the General Committee.
(j) In the event that the debenture member does not nominate nominee subscribers within 3 months of the purchase of such membership or within 3 months of a nominee vacancy occurring, then the debenture member shall be liable to pay normal Club dues (other than entrance fees, building levies and debentures) for each nominee subscriber vacancy until a nomination is made.
(k) The debenture member shall be liable to pay immediately upon written notice all outstanding debts due from the nominee subscribers to the Club.
(l) If the debenture member shall fail to pay Club dues or debts due from the nominee subscriber to the Club under sub-clauses (vii) or (viii) of this Article within 7 days of written notice being sent from the Club to the debenture member, the Treasurer shall give the debenture member a further written notice drawing attention to the failure to pay and notifying the debenture member unless the account is paid with 7 days from the date of the Treasurer’s notice the name of the debenture member shall be posted on the notice board of the Club.
(m) If the debenture member fails to comply with the said Treasurer’s notice within the period specified, the name of the debenture member shall be posted accordingly. Any debenture member whose name is posted under the provisions of this Article and who fails to pay the account in question with 10 days of such posting shall at the expiration of the said period of 10 days cease to be a debenture member of the Club and the debenture membership shall be forfeited back to the Club without compensation.
(n) The General Committee may, in their discretion, for good reason shown reinstate any debenture membership which has been forfeited under the foregoing provisions of this Article.
The joining fee for nominee membership is HK$ 404,000. This is a one-off payment and it is not refundable.
A person, company, firm or business may apply for a Nominee Membership. On being granted membership the holder of a Nominee Membership should nominate one member of its staff (together with spouse and children under 18 years of age) to use the facilities of the Club, known as the Nominee Subscriber. The Subscriber must pay the monthly charge.
When a Nominee Member wishes to change its Nominee Subscriber it is required to inform the Club in writing, giving details of the new subscriber. It should be enclosed a cheque for the re-nomination fee with an application form. If a Nominee Member does not nominate a member of its staff to use the facilities of the Club, then the Nominee Member must itself pay the normal monthly subscription and charges until such time as nomination is made, although a three-month grace period may be applied for.
Nominee Memberships may also be available by transfer from existing Nominee Members. When agreement between both parties has been reached, the applicant must complete a Nominee Membership application form and submit it to the Club. The existing Nominee Member should also notify the Club, in writing, of its wish to transfer its membership and give details of the applicant. With the approval of the General Committee a payment to the Club of a transfer fee to such amount as may be determined by the General Committee must be paid.
An Associate Member may apply to the General Committee for conversion of their Associate Membership to an Ordinary Membership. Such application for conversion may be accepted by the General Committee if it is satisfied that the Associate Member is an active participant in water sports or otherwise qualified for Ordinary Membership. Qualifying sports shall include sailboats, power boats, leisure craft, canoes, wind surfing and diving. Such conversion may be approved by the General Committee upon such terms, as it thinks fit. An Ordinary Members is entitled to five votes, these votes are not transferable to their spouse or other third parties.
Is any person over 21 years of age who has been duly elected as such. An applicant needs to find a proposer and seconder who are either Ordinary or Associate Members who endorse his application form before submission to the Club.
After election, all Associate Members are required to pay a onetime, non-refundable, entrance fee and thereafter must pay such subscriptions and other charges as the General Committee may fix from time to time.
After election, and after payment of the relevant fees, Associate Members and their families (including children under 18 years of age) are entitled to use all the facilities of the Club. Associate Members are entitled to one vote, the vote is not transferable to their spouse or other third parties.
1. Under Article 6 of the Articles of Association of the Club “the General Committee shall fix and may from time to time alter the amount of the entrance fee”.
2. It has been resolved by the General Committee to establish criteria for “Sailing Members” to become Associate Members of the Club for an entrance fee to be determined from time to time by the General Committee.
3. An applicant may qualify as a Sailing Member where:-
a) such applicant owns a cruiser or yacht and
i) executes a mooring contract for the mooring for such cruiser or yacht on a club mooring for a contracted period of not less than one year; and
ii) attends an in-house race officers course; and
b) such applicant is an established regular sailor and either:-
i) is known to at least four members of the Sailing and Marine Committee and competes on a regular basis in club sailing events; or
ii) is new to Hong Kong and is able to provide a log book or other evidence of regular sailing activity.
An established regular sailor shall be required to participate in at least 50% of club sailing events within their first year of joining and be seen to be actively supporting club sailing. Established regular sailors will be required to attend an in-house race officers course and shall be called upon to assist in club events in a voluntary capacity at least twice in the first year of membership. The Sailing and Marine Committee will review participation of established regular sailors on a quarterly basis.
c) Dinghy sailors wishing to join as dinghy sailors will be required to attend an in-house race officers course and shall be called upon to assist in club events in a voluntary capacity at least twice in their first year of membership. Such member shall be required to participate in not less than 75% of local racing and other dinghy events including ABC and joint ABC RHKYC races. The Sailing and Marine Committee will review participation of dinghy sailors on a quarter basis;

The award of Associate Membership to a Sailing Member shall be at the entire discretion of the General Committee.In the event that such membership is granted, members shall initially serve the first year of membership as temporary members and upon compliance with the foregoing provisions may be awarded Associate Membership status at the end of 12 months from the date of their joining or in the event of substantial compliance (but not total compliance) with the foregoing provisions, for such further period as the General Committee shall decide.
The entrance fee is currently HK$94,000 and the monthly subscription is HK$1,550. Building Levy HK$288 in addition a minimum food and beverage charge of HK$350 per month is imposed.
A person may be admitted as a Young Associate Member if he falls into the range of age over 18 and under the age of 29 years old.
Automatic transfer to Associate Member on 30th birthday with no extra cost is offered.
It is possible to take limited periods of “absent membership” when out of town without losing, in the accumulated amount paid towards membership fee. In this case a new rate shall be calculated on return to normal membership status.
We are only accepting a maximum of 50 of Young Associate Membership.
Short Term Membership (2 Years)
A short term member shall be entitled to membership of the Club for a period of 2 years. Such member shall have no voting rights and shall not be entitled to apply for absent membership.
A short term member may at any time apply to the General Committee for conversion of his short term membership to an associate membership by paying up the balance between 110% of the entrance fee for an associate member at the date of the application for conversion of his short term membership and the short term subscription fee over and above the monthly membership subscription fee paid by associate members.
In the event that a short term member shall fail to apply to General Committee to convert his short term membership to an associate membership within the period of his short term membership (i.e. within 2 years of election as a short term member such short term member) such short term member shall automatically cease to be a short term member upon the expiry of such period unless the General Committee shall resolve to extend the term of his short term membership.
A limited number of Weekday memberships are presently available from the Club. A Weekday member is any person who is over the age of 18 who has been duly elected as such. After election, Weekday members are required to pay a non-refundable entrance fee and thereafter must pay such subscriptions and other charges that the General Committee may fix from time to time.
After election and after payment of the relevant fees, Weekday members and their families (including children under 18 years of age) are entitled to use the facilities of the Club Monday to Friday only. They are not entitled to use the Club on Saturday, Sunday or Public Holidays. Weekday membership cannot be transferred to another individual or to a company. Weekday members are not eligible for absent or life absent status.
Weekday membership may be transferred to Associate membership following approval from the General Committee. The entrance fee for the transfer of membership type would be the different between the annual subscriptions paid and the current entrance fee for Associate membership at the time of the transfer being approved.
1. Any person who is aged over 9 years but less than 18 years and who has passed the Club’s Level 2 Beginners Dinghy Course or Optimist Stage 3 Dinghy Course may be admitted as a cadet member of the Club provided that no cadet member may remain a cadet member after his eighteenth birthday.
2. The proposal for cadet membership shall be countersigned by the applicant’s parent or guardian or sponsor who shall be primarily responsible for all financial obligations incurred by that cadet member to the Club and who shall sign a declaration assuming responsibility for all acts of the cadet member whilst on Club premises or using the facilities of the Club and absolving the Club from all liability for accidents. The General Committee may in its discretion approved a sponsor who need not himself be a member of the Club, upon such terms including execution of such documents as it may require.
3. A Cadet membership shall entitle such member to use the Club’s Middle Island Club house and dinghy hiring facilities only. A Cadet Member shall:-
1 .Be able to hire dinghies only in accordance with the current approved hiring regulations
2. Be allowed to sign for food and drink at Middle Island only, for themselves and a maximum of two other family members. They are not allowed to sign for any alcoholic beverage, either for themselves or their accompanying parents / guardians.
4. Cadet members shall not:-
(a) have rights to moorings or hard-stands:
(b) be eligible for election to any Club Committee:
c) be entitled to become an absent member
(d) have any voting rights
(e) be entitled to bring guests to the club other than 2 direct family members
5. Whilst Cadet Members aged 11 and over may be unaccompanied at Middle Island, ABC strongly recommends that ALL younger children are accompanied at all times by a parent or guardian except when attending an ABC recognized course
6. The following clause applies specifically to the Aberdeen Racing Academy and any club general coaching , in any shape or form: No parent, guardian or friend of the cadet can interfere either on the water within 0.5 nautical miles or shore side with any aspect of the ABC Race Academy Coaches, cadets or training sessions. The coaching sessions are closed sessions. Only coaches and the cadet members may attend.
7. The General Committee may in its entire discretion waive the payment of an entrance fee or remove a cadet’s membership, if any of the above clauses are broken.
Legacy Program Details
Children of Associate or Ordinary Members upon attaining the age of 21 to 29 years shall be eligible to join the Club in their own right as Associate Members (subject to the usual balloting procedure) and subject to their parent having been an Associate or Ordinary Member of the club for more than 10 years . The Joining Fee $15,000.
NEW YOUTH MEMBERSHIP SCHEME
In order make the Club more accessible to a younger audience the Membership Committee has decided to offer a limited membership joining scheme starting 24 December 2015. This membership is limited to 50 new young members and must be up-grade on each applicable birthday stated in the table below.
It is designed to offer a very attractive way to become member of the Aberdeen Boat Club and enjoy sailing, boating and recreation activity while studying or starting one working life.
The scheme is based on age group and allow Members under these categories to use the whole club facilities but do not allow voting rights
The Youth Membership becomes invalid when such Member reaches the age of 29. Youth Members may apply to convert their membership into Associate Membership on turning 30 by paying the difference between what was already paid and the actual membership entry fee.
